Pre-Nyepi drinks

Another pretty laid back day. In the evening pre-Nyepi celebrations started so we watched the rowdy Hindu groups parade their Demons down towards the beach. There was an excitable atmosphere and everyone seemed to be enjoying the day. We started on the beers at 3pm and went through the night!

04/03/2011 Nyepi Monster- Nyepi is the Hindu Balinese New Years Day. Ceremonies are dedicated to the Gods. On actual Nyepi day it is seen as a day of silence and there are no fires and lights are turned off in hindu communities. There is no transport on the roads and the airport is closed for the day. Devout Hindu Balinese villages make demonic statues made of bamboo and paper symbolizing negative elements or malevolent spirits. For the week before we saw communities coming together on the side of the road to make these ‘demons’. Click on photo for more info on Nyepi.
